Thinking Green | Environmentally Friendly Flooring

Dansk Hardwood flooring products are created from raw material originating from sustainable managed forests.

Our products are made with selectively harvested timber & materials which are strictly managed under the most advanced environmental control systems. Dansk Hardwood Flooring makes a conscious effort to protect the environment by adopting "green" forestry and environmental practices as a part of our hardwood flooring production.

Today, the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) boasts over 3,500 members throughout the world, spanning all ages and all skill levels. As a member of the NWFA, we have joined a diversified group of men and women who are working together to exchange ideas, advance their skills, and increase their knowledge.

Bamboo Fusion & the Environment

Bamboo Fusion was developed as a 100% fully sustainable flooring line as part of the Dansk Hardwood green strategy.

Bamboo is a rapidly renewable resource; it is self-regenerating, growing to maturity and achieving optimum hardness in approximately 5 years. It has high carbon absorption rates and releases oxygen into the atmosphere. There is both minimum waste and minimal pollution in its harvesting and production.

Some people may have concerns that the natural habitat and food supply of the Panda Bear may be harmed through bamboo harvesting. Bamboo Fusion uses only Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens) and is different to the species sought by Pandas; as a result the factory has no negative impact on their habitat.

Bamboo is technically a grass, not a wood product and is found in both tropical and sub-tropical climates throughout the world; grown in Asia, Africa, the Carribbean and Latin America. China is one of the key natural homes and is the largest source of bamboo in the world. China currently accounts for more than 500 bamboo species covering over 7 million hectares.

Good Environmental Choice Australia (GECA)

Bamboo Fusion is the only Bamboo flooring with the tick of approval from Good Environmental Choice Australia (GECA).

GECA’s independent certification scheme scientifically audits all facets of the manufacturing cycle including sustainable resource procurement, eco-sensitive manufacturing practices and occupational safety and welfare for employees and the community. This ensures environmentally ethical products are delivered into the market place, below is a summary of the audit.

Bamboo Plantations

Bamboo plantations are harvested selectively, with rotations determining which bamboo stems are ready for harvest. These are then marked and harvested accordingly. During a site assessment a sample area was visited, essentially the operation is selectively harvesting the best stems, leaving most behind for another year. The bamboo plantation is maintained on public land which is allocated by the government. The type of Moso bamboo used can develop itself quickly by its underground rhizome. The trees that are cut individually using a machete, leaves the root intact. This means the bamboo regenerates quickly and replanting is not necessary. The rules and regulations on harvesting bamboo are
  • Age (quality bamboo of over 5 years old only)
  • Cutting way (selective harvesting)
  • Cutting Season (winter to spring in order to avoid plantation damage)
  • Cutting Regulation (cutting volume below growing volume,
  • Cutting quota and licence (allocated by the government and publicly listed)
  • Forestry Bureau surveys to sites (in order to ensure adherence to cutting quota and licence)
  • Government monitors these conditions via the following means:
    • Forestry Bureau monitoring.
    • Bamboo and wood check stations
    • Forestry Police
    • Prosecution punishment system

Hazardous Substances

The mill has provided GECA with Formaldehyde MSDS as well as emission test results from the finished products. Formaldehyde testing has been carried out to DIN EN 717-2 and the results range from 0.2 to 0.5 mg/L, which is well below the maximum emission allowances under the requirements of this criterion.

Waste Minimisation & Management Policies

Suitable waste minimisation and management policies and procedures are in place at the mill site, this has been verified during site assessment by GECA.

Currently the mill uses the off-cuts from their production as fuel for the manufacturing facility’s electricity. The saw dust from the manufacturing process is sent to a furnace to produce electricity, or is sold to a third party recycler. Tin and plastic waste components are sold for recycling.

In addition, the cutting process of the bamboo blocks is done in such a way as to minimise waste. Consequently, the only component that ends up in landfill is sand paper. The flooring products can be reused.
